Lake Champlain's Revolutionary War naval battle, October 11, 1776 (The Battle of Valcour Island) - This little-known battle was actually of great strategic importance to the eventual success of the American cause. Although the American fleet (led by an army officer, Benedict Arnold) lost this engagement, it delayed into at least the spring of 1777 any attempt by the British to take control of the Hudson Valley, thus buying time for the Americans to gather the strength and resources later used at Saratoga.
Lake Champlain's War of 1812 naval battle, September 11, 1814 (The Battle of Plattsburgh) - This time the Americans prevailed over the British, and it was a turning point in bringing the war, essentially a stalemate, to an end.
Fort Montgomery - During our Kill Kare days some of us explored the ruins of this fort and wondered about the story behind it. It is located on the Canadian border, near the shore at Rouses Point where the lake flows into the Richelieu River. It turns out to have been built after the War of 1812 and completed to the extent that weaponry was put in place, but it was never manned with troops. Its remains are on private property.
